Festival Las Fallas - Valencia

While this started as a holiday to honor St. Joseph, it has turned into present day Las Fallas – literally translated “the fires”. A five day celebration of pyrotechnics and flames swell this mid-sized city of 1 million to 3 million. The preparation takes all year as neighborhoods and organizations create ‘ninots’ (puppets or dolls) out of paper mache, cardboard, wood and plaster. These can be incredibly elaborate and up to several stories tall. Holes are cut in these giant sized caricatures and fireworks are cleverly placed in them. On the night of ‘the burning’ they are lit on fire at midnight. Throughout the week many other festivities take place including bullfighting, parades, and beauty pageants. Don’t miss this!
