Cheung Chau Bun Hill's Festival - Cheung Chau Island

From: May 18 To May 22
Location: Hong Kong

If you have any interest in festivals featuring either the unique or the culinary, the Cheung Chau Bun Hill's Festival is the event for you!

Located about 12 kilometers south of Hong Kong, the tiny island of Cheung Chau plays host the annual festival. On the eighth day of the fourth moon, lasting four days, the event proceeds with traditional religious rituals, ancient operas, vibrant parades and traditional dance performances. While locals and festival-goers enjoy all the events, it's the erection of towering structures covered in buns of bread that is known as the festival highlight. The bun towers are located in front of the Pak Tai temple, built in 1783 to commemorate the Pak Tai, the Taoist God of the Sea.

The Bun Hill Festival race begins with hundreds of scrambling runners climbing up the breaded hills in an effort to collect the maximum number. In true Chinese custom, it is believed that the more buns you grab, the more good luck you will have in the coming year!
