Holi Festival of Color - Mathura & Banaras

March 01
Location: India

Unlike other holidays in India, the Holi Festival of Color is known to allow it's Hindu participants to ignore convention, dismiss the social taboos and greedily indulge in alcoholic drinks and sweets. It's a festival fueled by romance thought to originate from the celestial love between Radha and Krishna and the victory of good over evil. Beginning on the festival eve, a massive bonfire kicks off the celebration ushering in a full day of fun and an array of color unlike any event in the world. On the day of the festival, an exquisite rainbow of vibrant powders are thrown into the air to show the joy and mirth for the arrival of this Spring season.  While the festival is celebrated throughout all of India, both Mathura and Banaras do a particularly good job commemorating the holiday with their enthusiastic rituals and visual pomp.
