Christmas Eve and Christmas Day - Lalibela

January 07
Location: Ethiopia

If you can make it to Lalibela Ethiopia for it's Christmas celebration, you'll witness the remarkable migration of over 50,000 pilgrims descending upon Africa's "New Jerusalem". Tucked into the hills of northern Ethiopia, about 200 miles north of Addis Ababa, the remarkable site is the perfect place to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Based on the Coptic Lunar calender, the virgin birth is commemorated on January 7th. With the 11 monolithic churches, carved out of 12th Century red volcanic stone, now protected as a World Heritage Site, Lalibela is the perfect setting to combine history, religion and partake in the largest celebration in the world. Christmas!
