Loi Krathong – Sukhothai
November 02
Location: Thailand

This festival is a spectacular presentation of ancient tradition and astonishing beauty. The Festival of Lights is a three day event which climaxes on the full moon of the 12th lunar month. Based on the Western calender, the event generally falls in November. In this nationwide celebration, Mae Khongkha, the goddess of water is praised for another auspicious farming season. In an artful, timeless tradition, the Thia people construct a sacred offering from ornately decorated banana leaves, filled with candles, sparklers, flowers and food. People congregate around their local canal, river or lake and in a ceremony fueled by prayer and desires for a prosperous future. The Krathongs are released into the water and graceful float away carrying the wishes of the country. There is no better place to witness this event then in the ancient capital city of Sukhothai, where the festival originated. Spectacular fireworks with an entertaining and historical light show utilizing some of the oldest monuments in Thailand can also be enjoyed. This is not a festival to miss!
