In 1945 a food fight took place that would forever change the history of festivals. Today, La Tomotina is a sixty-one year old established tradition and considered one of the wackiest, and most anticipated festivals in the world. On the last Wednesday of August, upwards of 40,000 people pour into Bunol Spain, a small province of Valencia, to partake in the largest food fight on the planet. At 11:00am, a rocket is fired and the battle ensues. While the exchange is friendly, there is no shortage of enthusiasm and aggression. Participants launch the tomatoes until another rocket sounds off, indicating the years celebrations have come to another chaotic and entertaining close. By the end of the day, 110 tons of ripe tomatoes have been thrown, coating the streets and bodies of the festival goers. Book accommodations early and be prepared to get messy!
